With the slums rising in numbers the population graph of these cities and towns also becomes unmanageable. They also need the basics of water and electricity, these become a scarce commodity in towns for the permanent dwellers. Everything is in short supply as, the amount available is to be shared with these slum dwellers.

Instead of starving in villages, they along with their women folk move on to cities in search of employment. While men work as unskilled works, their women get work in households. They build jhuggies that later become a cluster of huts. Landless labourers are also attracted to cities as these have many factories where mill hands are needed. The rents of houses soar. All this leads to the creation of slums. Sometimes, these slums come up right in the midst of posh colonies. According to census data, there are towns with slums and the population living in slums is estimated to be 40,, Rapid urbanisation and worsening poverty globally have helped slum population to shoot upto million at the turn of the century according to the UN Report.

About 54 million people in the developed countries too live in slum-like conditions. There are many reasons due to which people in villages migrate to cities and create slums. Instead of starving in villages, they along with their women folk go over to cities in search of work. While men are employed as unskilled construction workers, the women get jobs as housemaids. These labourers sleep on the pavements. Later, they build jhuggis which in due course of time become slums. The landless labourers are also attracted to cities because cities have many factories where they can get jobs as factory workers.

Later, these factory workers call in their relatives and friends from their villages. In this manner, cities go on expanding. The spread of education in villages is also responsible for migration of rural people to cities.
