He has a delicate way of putting words together. He has written many poems, and one of his poems, Invictus , is a very perplexed, astonishing, and detailed poem that caught my eye right away. People would have to really read this poem to understand what is the meaning behind it.

They would have to look what is written between the lines. Throughout the poem the speaker uses the words "I", "me", and "my". This is showing first person and how the reader can notice that the poem is referring to the speaker, which in this case is William Henley.

The poem's main purpose is to exemplify the speaker's past, present, and future; and also his inability to be overcomed or conquered. The speaker is trying to get the reader to realize how a man, or a woman, should react to a challenge or struggle. The meaning behind this poem is to show that the speaker, William Henley, did have an unconquerable soul.

He wants the reader to know that if life kicks you in the gut, don't just lay there, get right back up and kick life's butt. Many people would agree that William Henley did have an 'unconquerable' soul. This is because he survived when chances had it that he would not. William was just a little boy when he was diagnosed with tuberculosis in the bone in his leg. This caused him to have his leg be amputated just below his knee.

Doctor's suggested that William should have his other leg amputated, but he refused. He sought to have treatment. And he found it. He was admitted to another hospital and was doctored by Joseph Lister. After a few years of horrifying treatment, Doctor Joseph Lister saved William's leg, and at that time, people say Joseph possibly saved William's life.

This drastic time period is what encouraged William Henley to write the poem Invictus. Invictus is from the Latin root meaning "unconquerable". So the title of William's poem is really defined as Unconquerable.

In the first stanza William says, " Out of the night that covers me, Black as the Pit from pole to pole, I thank whatever gods may be, for my unconquerable soul".
